Brief description

A nice, family-friendly hike with Greifenstein Castle (not accessible) and the Lourdes Grotto as highlights.

The hike is suitable for families but not stroller-friendly. The short section from the Greifenstein train station to the start of the trail on Hadersfelderstraße runs along the main road, and the sidewalk is narrow. The initially rather unattractive connecting stretch to the station is then rewarded by fantastic hiking trails.

Description

Tip/Fun Fact: The highlight along this hike is the Lourdes Grotto, which was built in the 1920s as a replica of the Lourdes Marian Grotto and has since been a popular pilgrimage site.

Route description From Greifenstein to the Lourdes Grotto

We start our hike at the Greifenstein-Altenberg train station and follow the main road towards Höflein an der Donau until we turn right into Hadersfelderstraße. There we follow the signposts towards Greifenstein Castle on the green-marked hiking trail. Upon reaching the castle, we follow the signposts towards "Hadersfeld Bell Tower." We reach a fire station and follow the paved road downhill to the right until we come across the red-marked hiking trail on the left, which we follow towards Tempelbergwarte. After this short detour with a beautiful view, we retrace our steps a bit and now follow the signposts towards "Hadersfeld Bell Tower" until we reach Schlossgasse and follow it to the left. We reach a signpost indicating the direction to "Lourdes Grotto via Binder Jockl" and follow it. Along the yellow-marked hiking trail, after a wooded area, we reach a gravel road, which we follow to the left (not sharply left). We reach the Lourdes Grotto and then continue straight ahead, crossing the parking lot and shortly after reaching the parking lot of the inn "Der Waldhof 2.0" and the bus stop.
